What is Black Friday

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, which is on a Friday. This special day begins the holiday shopping season. During this time many stores offer sales known as “early bird” specials that draw many people to them; even at such hours in the morning as four a.m. and in some cases, two a.m.

Many people stand in line for hours, waiting to get in and check out the specials. Often, small items are given free to the first several hundred people who file in. Many people wonder why this event has this special name. The reason is many retailers have some of their highest profits on this day.

When a retailer records gains and losses, losses are often recorded in red; while gains are recorded in black. This year, this event occurs this year, 2013, on Friday, November 29, 2013.

Advertisements for this day are published newspapers throughout the US on Thanksgiving day, the day before Black Friday. There are certain tips that can help you if you shop on this day such as deciding in advance what you would like to buy.

Make up a list and then decide which you need and want the most. It is known that big ticket items like a flat screen TV have the best prices and are items that can save you the most money.

If you take your family or some close friends with you, divide up and each take a different store. Each person can than buy what the others need at that store. In addition, buy only what you really need. Most importantly, try parking in a parking lot that is nearby; a store that is closed on Black Friday.

This will save you time and aggravation parking and then leaving. And always, dress warmly because in most cases, it will be cold.

Another helpful tip is to buy online. Many people don’t know that online retailers have items available on this day; however, the best part of buying online is, you don’t have to go through the lines, hassles and bad weather! Black Friday is also quite effective for those who live in rural areas because their days often start early in the morning.
